FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything prospective members ask about the SJA Flying Club.

How many members will the club have?

No more than 8. With eight members, each holds one priority week in every eight-week rotation, and the aircraft is still realistically available for open-time flying.

How does the priority-week rotation work?

Starting Saturday, January 2, 2027, the calendar is a continuous series of Saturday–Friday weeks assigned in order to Members 1–8, so the cycle repeats every 56 days. Each member gets 6 or 7 priority weeks per year, and the dates shift from cycle to cycle so holidays and seasons are shared fairly.

Can I fly outside my priority week?

Yes. Open time is first come, first served, and you can request time in another member's week. That member keeps priority unless they release the period.

What does it cost?

Proposed: a $200 nonrefundable registration fee, a $1,000 refundable deposit, $450/month dues and $135 per flight hour. The initial membership payment is $1,650. Terms are final only once the membership agreement is signed.

Is fuel included?

Yes. The $135 hourly rate is a wet rate. Members buy fuel as needed and eligible purchases are reimbursed or credited at cost against a receipt, so fuel does not add to your cost. Whether time is measured by tach or Hobbs will be confirmed in the final agreement.

Do I need a complex endorsement?

Yes. The M20G has retractable gear, flaps and a constant-speed propeller, so it is a complex airplane, and the pilot in command needs a one-time endorsement under 14 CFR 61.31(e). It does not need a high-performance endorsement (180 hp). We can help arrange training.

What experience do I need?

Minimums are set by the club's insurer, typically covering total time, retractable-gear time and dual instruction in the Mooney. We will publish the exact requirements once the policy is issued. Every new member completes a club checkout.

Can student pilots join?

Student pilots may apply. Eligibility depends on insurer approval and training with a club-approved instructor.

Is BasicMed accepted?

BasicMed is valid under FAA rules for this aircraft, within its limits. Whether the club's insurer accepts it will be confirmed when the policy is bound.

Who owns the aircraft?

N3910N is owned by Stratus Aviation Group LLC and leased to the SJA Flying Club, a nonprofit, members-only organization. Members don't buy equity in the aircraft.

Can I use the plane to carry paying passengers?

No. Club aircraft are for members' personal flying only. Passengers may share costs only as permitted by 14 CFR 61.113. Club aircraft are never used for charter or for Luxury Aviators clients.

Where is the aircraft based?

N3910N is based at Manassas Regional Airport / Harry P. Davis Field (KHEF) in Manassas, Virginia, about 30 miles west of Washington, DC.

Can I get my deposit back?

Yes. The deposit is refundable under the membership agreement after you resign with written notice and your account is settled.

When can I start flying?

After the club's structure, insurance and membership agreement are finalized, you'll sign the agreement, be added to the insurance, and complete your Mooney checkout.
